Why buy a defensive midfielder when we have Luiz at Chelsea?
There has been speculation over the last few weeks that we are heading into the transfer market to try and buy a new defensive midfielder to cover the loss of Oriol Romeu, who is now out for the season. And have been linked with the likes Paulinho, Cheick Tiote, Sergio Busquets, but is there really a point in spending such a massive amount on players when he have David Luiz?
The Brazilian may be regarded as a centre-back, but his performances in the club world cup have indicated that he would be the ideal kind of player to step into that role when we need him too.
Brilliant on the ball, impetuous, physical and good in the tackle, he could easily step into midfield and become one of the best defensive midfielders at the club.
There have even been calls for him to move into that role in the past, but no manager has ever really given the opportunity to show what he could do. Except until now as Rafa Benitez has decided to try him out to see how he would cope and I’m sure all of you will agree that he has probably looked more solid than he does at the back.
Although the club do see him as the long term replacement for the aging John Terry, we would probably be better served going out, buying a new defender or two and putting Luiz just in front of the defence because I believe that he would be quality in there when he gets used to it.
